Back in the Saddle; A Pebble For Your Thoughts?
I seem to have finally kicked this flu thing (again.) Between that & preparing to move, dealing with contractors, etc., I've gotten behind in my posting here. Time to start catching up, because I've got a whole slew of stuff I'm chewing on.
I'll begin with something brief. Dale, over at mole, had a great idea I feel the need to help perpetuate. It's based on the Jewish tradition of placing a pebble on a gravestone as a sign of remembrance. But I'll let him explain:
It certainly touched a cord with me. Very often I'm moved by a post, but I don't know why. Sometimes I'm not sure I really understand it, or maybe I just have nothing useful or intelligible to say in response, but I come up with a comment just to mark the connection. To leave a stone.
So I'm floating this proposed "emoticon", a little letter 'o' in parentheses, as a stone to leave in comments: (o)

I like the idea, but I've seen that configuration used for other uses, some vulgar, some not.
Sometimes words fail, and it doesn't feel sufficient to say, "I really can't express . . ." Having a symbol to show that we have nothing to say, but we wish we did, or something like that, would be very helpful.
Nice idea, a little abstract; and definitely, the emoticon for it needs to be something besides the standard ASCII-art boobie.
It doesn't match the stone idea well, but I just use an exclam for that.
!
Hey, maybe that can be ASCII art for dropping a pebble.
If you want one, just for you, a big rock (O)
Thanks Bry. :P
It's rare I don't have something to say on any given topic, but, sometimes, I don't necessarily want to take the time to write it all out & make sure it parses well, etc. I usually ask myself, "Will my comments add to this?" and, if the answer isn't a more-or-less unqualified 'yes!' I'll stay quiet. Unless, of course, something pisses me off so much that I have to say something or my head will explode, which is bad for the monitor.
So I like the idea of giving a thankful acknowledgement, without it being a "me too!" email (which I always find annoying.)
I thought that glyph had a naughty meaning, but I wasn't sure. Good to know you folks are on top of things.
Another potential candidate would be an asterisk.
