A new twist on the 'job hunt'...
Well, now that I'm here, it's time to look for a job. Hrm...ah...here's something:
Vikings wanted
OSLO, Norway -— Help wanted: Vikings. Must be friendly, tourist-oriented and interested in ancient Norse traditions. Crazed, bloodthirsty pillagers need not apply.
In a rare employment opportunity for Vikings, whose job market peaked about 1,000 years ago when they terrorized Europe in their longboats, southern Norway's Vestfold county wants to fill slots at its local historical park.
The ad, to appear in local media Saturday, will be simple: "Jobs available. Vikings in Vestfold,'' with a link to the center's Internet home page, said Lars Kobro, self-described chieftain of the Midgard Historical Center.
"More and more we see that tourists are interested in Vikings,'' Kobro said Tuesday. "They don't want just exhibits, but face-to-face encounters.
But the center is seeking to play down the Scandinavian Vikings' reputation as wild, murderous looters who pillaged and burned through much of Europe, a claim Kobro said was largely exaggerated in texts left by ancient English monks.
"They were really more traders and merchants,'' said Kobro. He said they are seeking a corps of about 50 part-time Vikings, ready to turn out at the center when needed.
Unfortunately, I'd have to relocate again. To Oslo. And, while leaving the country isn't necessarily a bad idea, I'm not about to do it right now. I think we'll hunker down here and weather the storm in this brick fortress.
(Thanks to James for this)

You know, someone needs to tell our Viking friend, Boltofr about this!
But then, that would mean the end of leaded cookies...
And Barbara just got back to Athens ;-)
Hi Hermit --
Hope all is going well with your move and your job search. Perhaps you'll be the world's first meditating Viking! I'm rather new to the world of blogs, but I wanted to alert you that I responded a few weeks back to your discussion about my book, One Bird, One Stone, that was included on your Thursday, March 3 post, titled 'Jack Kerouac and Silver Ravenwolf'. I responded with a fairly long post sharing some info about the making of my book, and how I uncovered some of the Kerouac & Beats material. My google alert pointed me to your site but that had a lag time, and I didn't end up posting a response until more than a month after your first post. As a result my comment ended up at the end of that thread and it has since occurred to me that maybe no one realized it was there! So I thought I'd write again and let you and anyone else who's interested in Kerouac and the Beats, Zen, etc know that my post can be found in your archives for March. Thanks again for your interest in my book! Sean Murphy
Hi, Sean...
Mea culpa. I went all hermetic and pretty much dropped of the 'net. I just did post a reponse back there at the original post. I'm not sure how coherent it is -- I seem to have forgotten the taste of words and the feel of keys -- but it's there.
Coincidentally, I also received email about a week ago from Jenine Trayer, aka, Silver Ravenwolf, about the same post. Aparently she's considering starting a blog, and happened to find the post connecting her with Kerouac. Her response was rather shorter than yours, and significantly less substantive, essentially boiling down to, "You compared me to Kerouac. Huh."
Now I feel I should watch my inbox for a note from Kerouac. Talk about a surprising discovery!
